Mikaela Lawhon

At 3 months I went septic due to mastitis. In the midst of the pain I still held my son and breastfed. I had mastitis 4 times never gave up.

What is the most rewarding part of being a mom?

Having a meaning to life. A reason to live. A reason to wake up. A reason to be motivated. Having a child is like your heart beating on the outside. You would do anything and everything to protect them from harm. Waking up after a long night and seeing them smile at you is a feeling no one can describe. My heart melts when I see my baby and he has given me a reason to fight.

What is the biggest lesson motherhood has taught you?

The biggest lesson motherhood taught me was to be selfless. My baby is my whole life and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I’ve had mastitis 4 times, sepsis, and am fighting with a chronic infection/inflammation in my uterus from my c-section. I never once got sad about it because I would do it a million times over again if it means I could have my son.

What would you do with $20,000?

If I got the $20,000, I would use it for my son’s future. Whether it’s college, a car, or a down payment on a house, it is up to him to decide. I will keep it safe until he is 18, and can decide what to do. I want to teach him responsibility, patience, and love, so when he is 18 he can make the right decision.
