Leah Blackmon

I am a mother of five, forged in the fire of life’s hardest battles. I’ve known pain, loss, and survival—but I chose resilience every time.

What is the most rewarding part of being a mom?

The most rewarding thing about being a mom is everything—the highs and the lows, the hard moments and the ones that shape you. It’s watching your children grow, think for themselves, and shine in their own way. It’s the unseen sacrifices, the quiet strength, and the moments that bring you to tears. Being a mother is watching five pieces of your heart walk outside your body—and loving them through it all.

What is the biggest lesson motherhood has taught you?

The biggest lesson motherhood has taught me is empathy and understanding. It’s easy to react based on circumstances, but in emotional moments, self-control matters most. Being a mother means learning to navigate not only your own feelings, but your children’s as well—paying attention to every cue, every shift, and responding with patience, intention, and love.

What would you do with $20,000?

If awarded $20,000, it would be life-changing for my family. I am a first-time homeowner (2024) and a single mother who worked and sacrificed to secure a home for my children—only to discover serious structural issues. Losing it is not an option. These funds would repair unsafe flooring, replace undersized joists, and address necessary restoration so my home is safe and livable. This house is our stability, our future, and everything I’ve worked for.
