Emily Dimond

My daughter is nonverbal and has lived a harder than average 7 year life. I’ve had to learn to cope with my anxiety to be her best advocate.

What is the most rewarding part of being a mom?

It is so rewarding every time I see my daughter accomplish something she’s been working hard at. Recently she has been learning to communicate with an AAC device, and the sheer joy and pride on her face when she knows she’s finally being understood has brought me to tears on more than one occasion.

What is the biggest lesson motherhood has taught you?

I have learned so much from my daughter. Watching her has taught me the importance of having the right paradigm. Doctors and therapists often comment on how happy she is despite her many challenges, and it’s because she simply chooses to always see the best. She is constantly grateful for every little thing in her life and I want to be more like her in this way.

What would you do with $20,000?

Even though my daughter has seen several doctors and has received a lot of help, we still have not received a diagnosis for her. We would take her to see a neuropsychiatrist and get her whatever help they deem necessary. We would also love to take her to Disneyland. Mickey Mouse is her hero and the one time she was able to meet him was truly life changing. I would give anything to give her that experience again.
