Ann Chen

In 2014 my younger brother died. In 2015, I found my husband in an affair. I’ve been a single mom with sole custody since then.

What is the most rewarding part of being a mom?

Being a mom is the best thing I’ve ever done. I have four kids. It’s such a privilege to get a front row seat to my kids lives. It’s hard to say what the most rewarding aspect is, but probably watching my kids grow into amazing young adults. I have three kids in high school currently so my parenting role will change dramatically as they start to head off to college. I am really proud of my kids as they have displayed kindness, hard work, resilience, and humility even as teenagers.

What is the biggest lesson motherhood has taught you?

Being a mom has taught me an immense amount of things. Two of the most useful lessons are, (1) focus on things you can influence - don’t spend time worrying about future things- just get up each day, work hard, and trust things will workout (2) image is less important than character - our value isn’t based on how we look to others- being a kind, person who treats others well is way more important than maintaining a picture perfect image.

What would you do with $20,000?

Well, I always joke that I live in a frat house (with my four kids and two dogs). I’d use the $20,000 to fix up my well-loved frat house. I’ve worked really hard to be wise with money as a single parent. And we’re doing okay! But house repairs have been outside of what I’ve been able to budget.
