Watching a living example of the best parts of me thrive is the most rewarding part of being a mom. I pride myself on providing tools to foster emotional intelligence in my children and help them navigate an unforgiving world. It is easier to raise confident, well-rounded children than to help them recover from their childhood. We have faced tragic loss, yet my children can cope and excel in their personal lives. That is my greatest reward.
What is one memory of your kids that you will never forget?My eldest son passed away in 2021, and my young daughter in 2024. On both occasions, when I made every effort to shelter my children from the emotional storm, they made a collective and conscious effort to shelter me. When faced with a tremendous loss that shattered the world as they knew it, they forged a bond between them to draw on their collective strength so they could support me. I will always hold those acts of selfless love in my heart as a testament to how truly amazing my children are.
What would you do with $20,000?I have lost two children to pediatric cancer. My eldest daughter passed away in January 2006, and my toddler recently passed away in January 2024. In the 20 years between Kiona's diagnosis and Carlene's diagnosis, there has been little change in the treatment options that are available for children fighting cancer. Pediatric cancer receives only 4% of federal funding for cancer research. I would use the $20,000 to start a research study for pediatric cancer to help save children's lives.
